Vietnam Golf & Country Club - the Nation’s premier golf club

Our Saturday course review brings us to the Vietnam Golf & Country Club, regarded by many as one of the country’s premier clubs and the first with 36-holes.  The club is conveniently located 20 kilometres from the centre of Ho Chi Minh City, offering members and guest an opportunity for frequent visits.

Utilizing the existing woodlands and natural contours of the land on this 300 hectare plot, the designers were able to create two truly great golf courses.  The West course first opened in December 1994, and was designed by Taiwanese architect Chen King Shih. The Par 72 Championship Course hosted the Vietnam Open
(Asian PGA Tour Event) in both 1995 and 1997.

The East Course opened in September 1997, and was designed by Lee Trevino, a six-time Major Champion Winner.  The East course offers more generous fairways than the West Course but is protected by well positioned bunkers, water hazards and undulating Bermuda greens.

We were graciously greeted by the club’s General Manager, Mr. Andrew Bowles who gave us a tour of the clubhouse and arranged for our round of golf.  In our chat, a particular interest of the clubs was the significant focus they put on Junior golf -- noting that juniors are the future of both the club and golf throughout Vietnam.  The young golfers are encouraged to participate in weekly group lessons and play with their peers.

On to our round of golf -- the caddies assigned to us have been well-trained as they provided very helpful information for those of us playing the course for the first time.  My caddy in particular had helped guide me to my best score of the past week .. thank you Vy.  I found the course to be rather forgiving, as an errant shot could still be brought back into play.

After our round, we were fortunate to dine at the club’s casual main restaurant.  Though the dining area can accommodate more than 200 diners, it gives a more intimate feeling to allow tables to freely engage in private conversations. Each of us felt the lunch was perhaps one of the best we’ve had during our travels.

The club also offers additional activities for their members, including tennis, squash or a swim in the club’s pool.  International menus are also available at the pool.

Vietnam Golf & Country Club comes highly recommended due to the high quality of golf, the high level of customer service and it’s proximity to the city.
