Montgomerie Links - A golfing gem on Vietnam’s Central Coast

It’s said that life and style go hand in hand at Montgomerie Links. This often awarded, beautiful golf course on Vietnam’s Central Coast is ideally situated a short distance from quite a few recreational and cultural attractions.

Designed by eight-time European Order of Merit winner Colin Montgomerie, it was the first of the new courses developed on the central coast and is regularly considered to be one of the best courses in Vietnam and throughout Asia.  In 2012, the Forbes Travel Guide rated Montgomerie Links
as one of Asia’s ten most elite courses, and it recently won a prestigious Asia Pacific Property Award.

On arrival we were greeted by the Director of Golf, Taylor Murphy, members of the club’s management team and their well-trained caddies.  They assisted us in a quick and orderly transition from arrival to the first tee within minutes.

The links-style course is perfectly suited for the rolling sand-dunes found along Vietnam’s unique East Sea shoreline.  Located near historical Danang Beach, minutes from Danang City in one direction and the Marble Mountains in another, Montgomerie Links a stunning 7090 yard, par-72 golf masterpiece.

Though I’ve been to Montgomerie Links on several occasions, this is the first time I’ve been fortunate to play 18-holes.  For those in our group, we found it to be challenging enough to test our best players, while also being playable and enjoyable for those of us who are middle-level and higher handicappers.

The links-style course has quite a few outstanding natural features -- sandy soil, wind-blown dunes and indigenous vegetation which were well designed and incorporated into the course’s layout.  The rolling, treeless fairways, thick rough and large greens have created numerous memorable holes.

Among the more memorable is the 18th, a perfect closing hole.  The longest par-5 at Montgomerie Links it creates a good opportunity to finish with a birdie before retiring to the clubhouse.  Though slightly uphill, and with a series of fairway bunkers, it allows long hitters to go for the green in two.

The 12th is another memorable par-5.  Extremely well bunkered, it requires 3 strategically placed shots to negotiate the 17 bunkers on the hole.  A difficult, undulating green, it requires the golfer to pay close attention to ensure they’re leaving themselves an uphill putt.

The 2nd hole is a very beautiful, long Par 3.  This stunning hole is surrounded by a native casuarina forest.  Golfers must be careful in club selection due to the prevailing winds off the East Sea.  Our well-trained, friendly caddies were did well in advising us on the proper clubs to use.

Following the round, we made our way back to Montgomerie’s large contemporary clubhouse for a delightful lunch along with the club’s General Manager, Mr. Huỳnh Văn Nhiệm.  Our conversation covered numerous topics ranging from the condition of the course to other features at the club, including their comprehensive driving range/practice facility, and the residential development called The Estates at the Montgomerie Links.
